I can't believe all the photos everyone sent in. Its brought back so many memories to me.
I was at Takli from Aug 65 to Nov 65 with the 355th A+e
squadron worked on f105 doppler and nav aids. I have some old slides and photos but I don't think there as good as the ones on your site.

I think I sent this to the wrong address originally. Anyway, I was assigned as NCOIC of Maintenace Data Collection and Administration from Apr 69 to Apr 70. I worked for Col. Charles T. Watkins, Chief of Maintenance. For those of you who might have known SSgt Frank Stanfield-the NCO who painted the Tunderchief on Col. Watkins' 105, he has passed away. After duty hours I would volunteer to help the mechanics on the flight line when I was not attending classes at the base education center. I enoyed my stay at Takhli but was glad to get back to Colord Springs.

It was over 40 years ago(sometime in 1964) when I served TDY at Takali RTAFB. I remember F-100s, Old Jap Barracks, cold showers and wearing boots to latrine due to snake sightings, portable control tower, and hearing English and Thai togeher on airways. I was lucky since my tour was short. Some guys had to serve 12 months and only got one R&R to Bangkok.I remember one or two trips to the local house of ill-repute at the edge of town. There really wasn't any bars but we had plenty of beer and gambling in the barracks. I was an Air Traffic Controller and a member of the 1st Mob out of Clark AFB. would like to hear from any 1st Mob members that served at Takali,

I am looking for an original 354th TFS or 355th TFW patch to honor my uncle, Captain Mel Morrill,USAF, who was an F-105 pilot assigned to the above units at Taklai, until he was killed in action on a strike outside Hanoi on August 20, 1967.

His younger brother, Major Dave Morrill,USMC, was an F-4 pilot KIA on March 18, 1967 on a close air support mission at Dong Ha. They are the only brothers who were pilots MIA/KIA during Vietnam.

Any help locating a patch would be deeply appreciated!

I was in the 355th when it was at George AFB, CA, from July 1962 until Jan 63. We didn't even have a full squadron of 105's, so we worked on the F-104's. I was in the engine shop, and we had a Thud on the trim pad, hit the starter, and of course all of that smoke came billowing out. I was in the cockpit, and noticed fire trucks rolling out, and they were headed towards us. The base had never seen a Thud use the cartridge starter before, and the base fire dept. went into a panic. Every body was there from the base commander to the wing safety officer, climbing all over the plane. I was still in the cockpit, because they had taken the ladder, and I couldn't get down. I was in Bitburg, Germany before George, and I loved working on the F-105. It was a good plane.

Part 1 of 2> Greetings: Four days ago I left a message on this site that stated my dad held the same position as the author of Thud Ridge and since then I have come to learn that my dad, John Malone, was an Assistant Flight Commander or wing leader at best toward the end of his term at Korat. I will politely chalk it up to the son of a fighter pilot being very proud of his dad. Mr. McNeil (?) who called, here is my more correct E-address (pmalone@tvi.edu). Dad is alive and kickin (quad bypass, 97) and said to please forward his name and number to those who are interested in contacting him. If you would leave your number in my E-mail or call again leave your number and I will call or have dad call-couldn’t get your E-mail to work.

Part 2 of 2> One of Richter’s childhood friends found dad 1.5 years ago, sent the 105 movie, and it included, as he seemed to know exactly who (he asked for Capt. Malone) my dad was as it had dad stripping down to his gym shorts in the cockpit after his 100th to get thrown into the base pool. To see the actual footage was a proud moment of an event that I had heard of years before; there was much super 8 at the end of the movie that included dad’s 100th, elephants, F-105’s, etc. Thanks again for this site and to all who served. My dad, John Malone, served at Korat in 66-67 and flew the F-105. I recall every night before we went to bed, saying our prayers, that while we prayed for our dad someone else's dad may not make it (friend or foe). We visited some of these sites the other day and I was as proud as ever as dad recognized so many names. I was told he held the same position as the author of Thud Rigde at Korat. Karl Richters story is awesome; what a true fighter pilot. Dad said although he went down on his 198th mission, they were all sure he was over 200. The lighter side is that dad came home with the handle bar mustache that I saw in these sites the other day. A big thanks to you all who have made these memories on the net. Paul Malone, youngest son.

Hello All,
My name is Steve Morris This is my first visit to the site and I hope to offer more later. I was a "Senior Advisor to the Royal Thai Air Force" -- an air traffic controller in Takhli tower -- August 1972 - August 1973. I only have one war story. I may be the only person that ever went AWOL to Vitnam -- I flew into Kontum, RVN (under fire)in C-130 with Capt. Applebaum -- from CCK. We left Kontum and stopped at Phan Rang, then Thon San Nute, then back to Takhli.

I was TDY to Takhli with the 34th TFS from January 1969 thru March 1969 from Korat, while the runway was being resurfaced at Korat. I went back to Takhli at the end of the 355th air ops in October 1970. I was mainly a Korat guy 34th TFS and 6010th Wild Weasel Sq. Thuds were the absolute best. The aircrews that bombed Package 6 with the Thud are the bravest warriors in history.

Moved to U-Tapao just after Christmas and remained until summer of '71. Sure was a lot of activity at both stations during that period, though it's difficult to find any history of missons. WONDER WHERE ALL THOSE BOMBS WENT?

We were assigned and had our names on an F model, and Red River Showboat was painted on the fuselage just under the Pilot's ladder. The crew chiefs were Sgt Mike Moon, and A/1C Claude Mariucci. Neither Ralph nor I can remember the tail number of the Red River Showboat. Can any of you help me with the number and/or the crew chiefs addresses. Hell-0! I just found this site. . . talk about slow and late! I have very good memories of my "Split-Tour" of Takali. I flew into Takali in October of '65, TEY from Chambly AFB, France. I was part of the ground crew that ferried over 5 B-66's from France. AFter my TDY in Feb. '66 I returned to France and showed up at Takali again in Oct. '66, to complete my years tour. I ;left Takali in May '67. I am now looking fro anyone that came down with prostate cancer due to "Agent Orange" contact thru working on the B-66s. I can remember cleaning the oil-ly stuff off the air craft after their mission. If you can help I'd appreciate you contacting me at: hrdillon@mindspring.com or calling me (315) 339-3475.

I was mobilized to Takhli in January 1973, only 2 months out of tech school, as an Integrated Avionics Systems Specialist on the F-111A.
My unit was the 474th Avionics Maintenance Squadron at that time, but later that year the 474th TFW became the 347th.
I hated being there initially, but that soon changed; I was very nearly court-martialled after missing numerous port calls to go back in 1974!
I have quite a few pictures squirreled away somewhere... when I can dig them up, I'll get in touch about sending them to you.
Sawatdee!

Great site. Had no idea it was run by a fellow "weather weenie"!!
I was George AFB from 75-79 and share many fond memories of the Thuds while they were stationed there, after having rotated back from Thailand. Spent many a week up at Cuddeback AGGR "getting the winds" for them, and still have several photos of them strafing and bombing on the range. Left to crew with the Hurricane Hunters and got out altogether after 7 years.
A great site dedicated to the bravest bunch of pilots I've ever met, before or since. A proud salute to each and every one of you, where you are still with us or slipping the surly bonds........

My name is Ralph LaRue. I was in Takhli in 1967. In Weapons and Munitions. I just read the newspaper article you posted about SSgt. Joseph Vultaggio receiving the Airmans Metal for his efforts to save the crew of the crashed EB 66 on Nov. 17, 1967.
I too witnessed that event. I was on the steps of one of the new hooches when it happened. I was processing out to come state side. It has always haunted me that, as I was preparing to leave, these men were dying. I almost could not believe Sgt. Vultaggios' efforts. He repeatedly entered that burning plane trying to save those guys only to be forced out by flames. Over the years I have told many people of his heroism that day. He should have received higher than the Airmans Metal. Now I know his name. Thanks for sharing.

Great guest book, Bob. My tour in Thailand from April 68 to April 69 was spent on the flight line, working the graveyard shift, and lugging jammers and other ECM equipment in and out of the EB-66s. Hi, I was at Takhli from 4/66 - 6-67 as an SP. Finding this site brought back a lot of memories, wow, what a time. Would enjoy hearing from anyone who was there at the same time. One of many memories was Christmas 66. Our flightline was almost bare. I asked a ground crewer "where'd all our birds go, I thought it was Christmas and there was a truce in Nam"? He said ....... "so sorrly GI, no truce in Cambodia" Great bunch of guys that served there. God bless to all.

Bob, Great web site. Haven't visted in a while. Many trips back to Takhli since 68. Most recent this past August, next this next February and March. If you would, please tell me the year that MGen Giraudo passed away. He decorated me in Takhli with AFCM and I just ran across the picture the other day and scanned it. Super guy. The troops like him. He was a proven hero and had my full respect.

Was fortunate to get several rides while in the Guard and could thus appreciate the 105 even more. I am an F15E Instructor Pilot in the 333rd Fighter Squadron at Seymour Johnson AFB, NC. We had some Vets from the 333 TFS at Takhli join us in a few squadron and base celebrations over the weekend. I was sad to see that our squadron has failed in its duty to properly maintain its heritage and history. We had no idea the significance of the efforts of those of you who served at Takhli. This is a desparate plea to those of you with stories, pictures, memorabilia, or any information. Please send them (or copies) to me at my email address: Scott.Taylor@SeymourJohnson.af.mil, or 126 Kelly Drive, Goldsboro, North Carolina 27530. You can also reach me at home at 919-736-8407 if you have any questions. We got a few things recently from Wright-Patt, but it only gives us insight into the real history of the squadron. It was fun to find your web site and see pictures of the base again after all this time. When I left Takli I crossed trained into EOD and spent 22 years in that field. I retired out of Eglin in 93 and now work as an environmental consultant for a company in Maryland. I would be interested in hearing from others that may have been at Takli during that time.

Hi! I was stationed at Takhli from Sept 67 to Sept 68. Did all the fun things we all did, managed to be at Da Nang for the Tet thing in 68, but made it back. We were recovering an EB-66 and got the crap blown out of us. The Sowie made it back before we did but everyone was happy. I worked Engine Conditioning (Jet Shop) and we swapped between the 66s and 105s. On the other days we helped the Thais with their F-86Fs and T-6s. Had a great time and then got to do two years in Viet Nam with the 1131 Special Activities Squadron (AF Advisors to the VNAF). Had a great time and have a lot of pictures from both places.

Youngest son put me onto your web site. Gave me a bodacious flashback.
Was there in 68 with the HArvest Reaper F-111 group. Went back to Thailand
several years ago on business with another government agency. Didn't see Takhli, but flew into Udorn.
Couldn't tell the difference. Stepping off the plane jerked me back in time about 20 years. When I saw
the revetments and delapidated hangars I could almost hear the sounds of the "good old days".

Your site brings back many pleasant memories and the work that has been put into it displays that you are still dedicated to duty. I functioned in LE and Security while at Takhli and met many wonderful people, GI's and Thai Nationals. Upon arrival in-country, I could'nt figure out how all the Thai people knew I was a cop(laugh). I would be interested in hearing from anyone who worked Cobra Flight Security who was part of a group of friends known as the "Wrecking Crew". Thanks for a great site and keep up the good work.

I was in the 469th at Korat and then I was transferd to the 333rd at Takhli. I was in thailand from May 1968 to May 1969
I really liked the people there, because they were friendly.
It made me fill proud that I was doing something for our
troops and helping the Thais.I went into the reserves after
I got off active duty in the Air Force and retired in Feb 91
I was a crew chief on the A-10 Worthog and worked with several people who also worked on the F105 in Tahiland. I would like to go back to Tahiland and visit. Mike Smith

I was at Takhli from Jan 68 to Jan 69. Serviced the radios and other comm gear in the F-105's and EB-66's, then took over responsibility for the guidance systems for the Bullpup AGMs. This excellent website brings back a lot of vivid memories.

My wife and I visited Chiang Mai with the Friendship Force in 1999 and stayed with two Thai families. All of the Thai people we met were just as terrific as the ones I knew in the 60s!

I`ve read Col. Broughton`s THUD RIDGE several times. My paperback became so worn that I sought the hard cover version from my library. This was in the early 1980`s. What a disappointment!!! The card holder showed it had been checked out only ONCE! How sad. I went back to the library and told them the book had been lost and paid for it. I still have it to this day. Lest we forget.
