Capt Jim White

Captain Jim White wanted to have his picture made with some battle damage his aircraft took in October of 1969. A short time later, on November 26, Capt. White was shot down over Laos. The AP wire story which appeared stateside and in the Pacific Stars and Stripes said, in part...

Air Force Capt. James B. White, brother of one of the astronauts killed in
the 1967 spacecraft fire, has been lost on a mission in Southeast Asia. The Pentagon listed him as missing as the result of hostile action.

His brother, Edwin White II, was the first American to walk in space. He
died, along with Virgil Grissom and Roger Chaffee in a fire during practice aboard an Apollo spacecraft.

On a personal note, Capt. White's wife, Sharon, was listed as living in Bangkok. She actually lived in one of the places in downtown Takhli, I understand. I don't know who had to tell her, but you can imagine being all alone in a strange country and having to deal with such a blow. When I took the photograph, I remember Jim telling me that he was going into the astronaut program when he got back to the states. First, he had to have a Vietnam tour to be considered.
